In 1773 Louise d'Épinay (Louise Tardieu, Marquise d’Épinay) published ‘Les Conversations d'Émilie’. This book (2-part) marks an important phase in the development of educational thinking in 18th-century France. She deviates from traditional pedagogical methods by teaching her granddaughter privately.

In 1779 Wolff already described her own views in her ‘Proeve over de opvoeding’. Wolff considered children to be good by nature, sincere and open-minded, and she believed that children go through a natural development as they grow up. Her advice: let children free and accompany them, then they learn more and retain their childlike qualities.
