This engraving is one from a series of four allegorical plates showing the elements after Cornelis van Holsteyn (later copy by Justus Danckaerts).

Plate:
Fire. Mythological scene with Venus and Cupid on a cloud in top corner, looking at a group of putti holding hands and dancing around a burning altar, a basket of flowers put against the altar base, two putti playing music in background.

Inscription Content:
Lettered in lower margin: "IGNIS" and "C: Holsteijn inventor / C: Danckerts sculpsit" and "C: Danckerts excudit cum privilegis".

Cornelis Danckerts:
Engraver and publisher; born in Amsterdam, he worked as a publisher between 1628 and 1656; founder of an important dynasty. Dancker Danckerts was his son and heir; Justus was another son.
In 1630 he bought Jan Muller's copper plates and republished them.

Cornelis Holsteyn:
History painter and occasional etcher. Born in Haarlem, moved to Amsterdam in 1652 where died. Son of Pieter I and brother of Pieter II
