African - PENDE MUYOMBO Mask, D.R. Congo with Iron Stand.

African - PENDE MUYOMBO Mask, D.R. Congo with Iron Stand.
3rd half of the 20th century, very good condition

The mask has a very peaceful expression, which we are accustomed to with Pende masks.

This type of Pende mask was worn like a cap on the head,

as though the deceased would see the mask from above.

The raffia beard is unfortunately missing; this would have obscured the face of the dancer.

The carvings on the jowls also represent the beard.

There are 3 different types of mask with long beards: (giwoyo, kindjinga and muyombo.)

Each of these three had ceremonial connotations.

Those with the long beards came on shortly after Tundu the Clown and Mbangu the Epileptic had ended their dances.

Dimensions: h: 46 cm, w: 20 cm, d: 13 cm (measured without stand).
The iron stand is included.

Shipping: insured with DHL and tracking number.
