Wood, magical load.
Magnificent Kusu/Hemba Figurine with a receptacle on the summit of the head, it contains well-preserved magical load.
Long characteristic beard. This one is very finely carved and crenellated.
Initially considered as a hybridisation of Hemba and Songye arts, Kusu art now enjoys recognition of its own identity, even if Kusu sculptors have borrowed diverse themes and styles from their neighbours, the abovementioned ethnic groups.
We can observe here a remarkable figure which is both a power figure, like the Songye Nkisi which prominent belly is hollowed with a cavity containing magical load, let’s remind that it protects its owner against evil forces; and a Singiti ancestor representation of the Hemba, as attests the bearded serene face, very finely carved and magnificently well-balanced.
A piece which responds to two very distinct ritual uses, gathered together here. But, as we previously mentioned, the Kusu did not only borrowed the inspiration of their neighbours, they also have their own characteristics.
Piece close to the Singiti ancestor figures of the Hemba.
The beard symbolises the wisdom of the ancestor. Among the Kusu and the Hemba, the ancestors’ cult is truly central.
Very lovely patina attesting of the many libations of palm oil it was subject to.
