A. Bastien (1873-1955).

Born in 1873 in Elsene - died in 1955 in Uccle.
Painter of portraits, still lifes, genre pieces, landscapes and forests. Studied at the academies of Ghent (pupil of J. Delvin) and Brussels (pupil of J. Portaels). Prix ​​Donnay (1894) and Godecharle (1897). Discovered Courbet and Delacroix in Paris; exhibits at national fairs. Founding member in Brussels of the Sillon. After 1897, he travelled to Egypt, Algeria, the Sahara. Co-author of the "Panorama du Congo" (Universal Exhibition of Ghent, 1913). Employed in 1914-1918, he painted canvas on the front; King Albert ordered the "Panorama van de IJzer". Professor (1927-1945) and then director of the academy of Brussels. Member of the royal academy of Belgium (1945). Realistic trend, loyalty to nature, use of a thick paste, sensitive to light. Has done all genres. Preference for the Soignes forest, the area of the Rouge-Cloître (Brussels).
