F. de Goya, (1746 – 1828) (=F.J. de Goya y Lucientes).
“No te escaparás” (You will not escape), etching and aquatint dated 1798. No. 72 of 80 etchings from the series Los Caprichos, title and no. “72” in the margins. Documented and included in Delteil no. 109, Harris no. 107.
Image dimensions 19.7 x 13.7 cm, paper 21.6 x 15 cm, mat 23.9 x 17.2 cm.
One of Goya's most famous etchings. A small piece of the background has disappeared, due to dirt on the plate or by damage due to silverfish. Furthermore, a very sharp, clear and complete print. Light discolouration compared to the margin, but under a mat and it is thus a nice piece. On the back is some light water damage, which is not visible on the front within the edge of the etching print and in the far outer margin only as a faint discolouration (see photo). The contour line has been interrupted in a few places, but compared to images from Prado, British Museum, among others, proves that this is part of the print.
All Goya’s etchings have been published posthumously and all Goya’s etchings were unsigned and only published after his death. Please see the museum sites for further details.
Here is an interesting, 19th century anonymous drawing with the same scene, with added signature "Goya". Technique black crayon, grey washed. Laid on very old, cardboard surface and under a modern, brown mat.
