t.a. Dirk Langendijk (1748-1805)
Historical depiction with two horses in the foreground, etching ± 1770. Image size up to the contour line 8.9 x 13.7 cm, etching paper 11.7 x 16.8 cm. The etching is very pristine. Notes: some light horizontal folds, in the top margin is some sturdy paper glued on as surface in the centre, with double frame in pencil, size 24.5 x 30 cm. Glued to the back is the description, probably from an earlier collector (19th century).
The etching is not signed, but based on stylistic grounds and because of the historical subject, and the print was used more often in brown/sanguine, attributed to Dirk Langendijk.
Dirk Langendijk is included in Thieme-Becker and Scheen. A monograph was written by M. Menalda: 'Dirk Langendijk (1748-1805): tekenaar in woelige tijden', in Teylers Magazijn 11 (1993), no. 1.
