Roodenburg was a painter and etcher. He learned the trade of graphic designer from Philippe Zilcken. Roodenburg was best known for his city scapes of, among others, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. In the 1960s customers of Nutroma could save up for a coffee and breakfast tableware set from Villeroy & Boch. On the tableware Roodenburg’s black and white images of Amsterdam cityscapes were depicted.

Roodenburg was a member of prominent artists associations, such as Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Pulchri Studio in the Hague. The book ‘H.E. Roodenburg(1895-1987): topografisch etser’ offers an almost complete overview of his graphic work
