Jan Kagie Jr. was the son of a well-known artist Johannes Leonardus Kagie (1885-1960). He learned the rudiments of painting from his father, but was self-taught. After his move to Rolde he came into contact with the painters of the artist collective De Ploeg. Along with a number of Drentse colleagues, including Reinhart Dozy, Anton Heyboer and Hein Kray, he founded the art circle De Drentse Schilders in 1946. Kagie painted mostly figuratively, landscapes, interiors and still lifes. He was a member of the professional association of fine art artists and Arti et Amicitiae and got the Arti-Medal awarded in 1984.
