Old Female Figure with Child, Maternity, ASMAT, PAPUA, INDONESIA.

This maternity figure refers to the turtle (mbu), which is considered to be a potent fertility symbol because of the numerous eggs it lays. The turtle, for the Asmat society, represents the mythical Primal Mother. She is the earth guardian for their territory, this in contrast to the (Wreathed) Hornbill, which is an animal that connects the living with the afterlife. Through sculpture, the Asmat would lure spirits to localise themselves in their representations. Once the spirits had entered the woodcarvings, their 'playing ground' was limited and the Asmat would be able to control and influence them and their realm...

Collected ca. 1960.
