Yki Nummi (1925-1984) was an artist and designer and is considered one of the most notable Scandinavian designers who was active between the 50s and 70s. He worked as a lighting designer for the Finnish Stockmann-Orno fixture factory from 1950 to 1975 and designed hundreds of light fixtures during this period.
The most famous fixtures by Nummi are the "Modern Art" table lamp from 1955 and the Lokki pendant light from 1960, also known as "The Flying Saucer".
Nummi first studied mathematics and physics at the university after World War II. He then studied decorative painting at the Institute of Applied Arts in Helsinki in 1950. Due to his education, Nummi had a solid theoretical base, especially in the relationship between light and colour.
