¶ Gerd Arntz (1900-1988) was a German-Dutch graphic designer best known for his infographics and pictograms.
In 1919 he attended the art school in Düsseldorf and in 1920, in Cologne, he met the progressive artists Jankel Adler, Franz Wilhelm Seiwert and Heinrich Hoerle. His first political woodcuts appeared in ‘Die Proletarische Revolution’ in 1926. He was associated with the Moscow institute of pictorial statistics from 1933.
After Hitler took over Germany, Arntz went to The Hague in 1934. His woodcut The Third Reich caused a political incident with Germany in 1936. In 1943 Arntz was drafted for the German army. After returning in 1946, he started working for the Netherlands Institute for Statistics. A major exhibition of his work was held in The Hague in 1976.
