Ngil mask in carved and polychrome wood with kaolin and textiles, shown a beautiful age-related patina.
The Ngil masks were used by members of a male society of the same name during the initiation of new members and the prosecution of criminals.
Masked, dressed in raffia costumes, the rituals were carried out in the villages at night, illuminated by torchlight to hunt and punish sorcerers.
