Original woodblock print - Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Fudo Waterfall at Oji - from the series "Forty-eight Selected Views of Edo" - 1892 Memorial Edition

This print was published in 1892 by Kodama Matashichi (active 1881-1894) and was printed with the original, partially edited woodblocks (the date/lettering in the margins were added) (1856-1858). The print is part of a memorial series, which consists of a selection of the 48 most memorable designs from the series "One Hundred Views of Edo". Many of the woodblock prints from the earlier editions are now extremely rare. This memorial series provides a good opportunity to obtain an original woodblock print of these classic Hiroshige designs.

For this original from 1892, also see: https://ukiyo-e.org/image/waseda/201-2531

Impression: Beautifully made "bokashi shading" in the waterfall, foreground, etc. Some mica in the waterfall. Detailed "carving" and "printing", great attention to detail.

Comment: Oji, located at the edge of the Edo, was a popular holiday destination. The city had many picturesque spots, including the famous seven waterfalls, one of which is portrayed here. The third shogun, Yoshimune (1684-1751), developed this area for tourism by planting cherry trees (spring visit) and maple trees (picnics in Autumn). The rope in front of the waterfall is a shimenawa, a holy rope that separates the mortal world from the holy world. In this case, the sanctuary is fenced off for the river god.

What makes this later "Memorial Edition" print recognisably different from previous prints, is the presence of the extensive text in both the right and left margins. Also typical is the use of slightly brighter colours, which were popular in the mid Meiji period

Dimensions (excluding margins): 22 x 33 cm
