This is one of the most famous works of the artist Yury Nikitin (Ukraine).
He was born in 1958 in Kiev, graduated from the Ukrainian Academy of Arts (stage design department). After a short period of work in the cinema (Alexander Dovzhenko Film Studio), he is engaged in easel painting, icon painting and encaustic.
Nikitin has achieved great fame nationally for his icons, which have been the subject of several solo exhibitions over the past couple of decades.
Artworks of Yuri Nikitin are kept in churches of Ukraine, Georgia and Russia, as well as in the collections of President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, the Museum of the History of Kiev, the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary in Ukraine, in private collections in Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, France , Croatia and the USA. The author held 12 personal and 7 collective exhibitions of his works of art.
As indicated above, in the art world, Yuri Nikitin is known primarily as an icon painter and lover of complex painting techniques, such as, for example, encaustic, a painting based on mixing pigment of paint with resins and wax. In the 90s, he developed the technique of painting on the skin, which is developing to date. Sometimes the artist uses this technique in icon painting, but mainly uses it to embody endless variations on his favorite medieval plots. Complicating the decoration of the picturesque surface, Yuri Nikitin at the same time stylistically accurately presents images, events and phenomena. Not striving for the historical plausibility of the image, the artist simply gives the viewer the opportunity to feel the spiritual, fertile atmosphere that the icons he painted are endowed with.
This painting, named “Queen’s dress”, was finished by Nikitin in Summer of 1996 and represents eloquently the artist’s style and technique. The work was done during a brief period when the artist was interested in Celtic cultures of the past.
