Mainline History: The first Series BR 50s were built in 1939 as a standard locomotive for freight trains. These locomotives could reach a top speed of 80 km/h and as such were the ideal locomotives. Around 1948 there were a total of 3164 of these locomotives in service. These were later used in World War II to supply the troops. The last locomotive was withdrawn from service in 1987.
