This black painted Wood Baule Mask from the Ivory Coast. Baule represents a buffalo with a bird on top . Those Baule masks where used on top of a raffia costume to dance during the Goli ceremonies in honor to Gu, , the ruler of the world.
Some chips missing, top of the horn, tongue, cracks in the wood on the upper back ( see images)
Most Baule Masks represent humans but it is rare to see an animal mask symbolising the age and wisdom of animals. It is not uncommon for other human masks to have an animal attribute, or a human figure as a crest but I have not often seen two animal masks.
The holes on the sides of the mask help attach the mask to the face of the wearer. Baule masks are all unique.
Uper parts of the horns missing, part of the rim restored 're-glued. ( see images)
From the collection of D.Taitt a well known abstract painter in Paris who was born in 1930.
