The strength of the rectangular mask which is separated but the nasal bridge, contrasts by the simplicity of the wooden figurine with very fine carving. This figurine represents the first woman, consecrated by the Andmboulou as the Yasigine.

According to Hélène Leloup, the first Satimbe would have been created around 1850 by a so-called Ambagono from the village of Yabatalou, because he would have been struck by the beauty of a young girl named Timbe. since this mask had great success, the sculptor and his successors would have reproduced it (H. Leloup, 1994, p. 562).

The Yasigine, “woman of the Sigi”, is the only woman who plays an active role in the rites of the Awa, hence, she occupies a prominent role within the society. She takes part in the Sigi, drinks binge, approaches masked men during funerary ceremonies, and can participate to certain dances. Her role mainly consists in quenching the masked dancers at rest and to prepare the sesame oil which we add to millet beer on some occasions. Most generally, she is the servant of the men of the Awa. Hence, we a dancers falls, he must immediately withdraw from his comrades and the Yasigine will kneel at the place where he fell, yelling mourning youyous: failing to perform this special ritual for his funerals and dama, will give rise to the appearance of masks.
