The Illyrians were a group of tribes who lived in ancient times on the Western and North-Western Balkans and in the South-Eastern part of Italy, on the Adriatic coast and in its hinterland. The area of settlement of the Illyrians in the Balkans is called Illyria in the ancient Greek and Roman historiography. The largely unknown Illyrian language, due to lack of written testimonies, belongs to the Indo-European language family.
