Guido Gambone - La Tirrena - Vase - Abstract
Italy - 1950-1999 - Ceramic, Glazed

In very good condition, a unique and very rare ceramic glazed vase made circa 1955 by Italian ceramist Guido Gambone (1909-1969). Marked on the bottom with a donkey and ‘Gambone Italy’.

Dimensions: Height 23 cm x Width 7.5 cm x Depth 4 cm.

The vase has a very unique decor in the colours blue and red with different patterns on both sides which makes this vase so special also thanks to the typical 50s colours.

See the last three photos with a green arrow indicating glaze imperfections caused by the glaze not sticking effectively to the ceramic during the baking process inside the ceramics oven. No cracks, chips or fleabites.

Background information:
Guido Gambone (1909 - 1969) was one of the most important and most influential Italian ceramic artists in the mid 20th century. He was born in Montella, Avellino in Italy in 1909. He focussed on painting as a young man and moved with his parents to Vietri in 1927.

He started his career with the local earthenware at Avallone and continued his training at Manifattura Artistica Ceramica Salernitana, before he moved to the famous I.C.S. (Industria Ceramica Salernitana). He became artistic director at I.C.S. in 1935.

After that he started his own potteries, La Faenzerella in Vietri and later La Tirrena in Florence.

The production of this unique vase took place under the label Artistic Ceramics in his own pottery called La Tirrena which was founded in 1950 in Florence by Guido Gambone himself.

Pieces made by Guido Gambone in the ovens of this pottery wear the donkey symbol which Gambone already used back in the day when he worked in Vietri in the factory where he founded La Faenzarella.

He passed away at the age of 60 in 1969. Gambone’s work mixed the art of painting, primitivism, tradition and modern artistic movements and became enormously influential.
