Description

Tô-ba was a prominent chinese statesman from the Song dynasty (1036-1101).

He was also a famous poet, a scholar and a calligrapher. His chinese name was Su Shih.

As a consequence of court intrigues he was finally banned from the court and exiled to the island of Haï-nan.

He is represented here on the road of exile, riding his mule and wearing a large round hat. The netsuke is not signed, but is very well crafted, with well executed details.

No himotoshi which is replaced by a small metal ring, inserted on the left side of the horse just behind Tô-ba's leg. .
