Brunello ‘Il Greppo’ is one of the greatest excellences in Italy, among the most famous red wines in the world and a legendary star of the production of Moltalcino. It is called the father of the entire denomination because it is the one that gave birth to the production of the famous and upper-crust Brunello of Montalcino. Let’s take a step back and try to understand how Biondi Santi, the historic winery, came to sit on the throne of the hill of Montalcino. Until 1825, the most famous and appreciated wine in that tiny plot of Tuscan land was Moscadello, a slightly sweet and easy-to-drink white wine. It was just in these years that Clemente Santi arrived on the scene, and began to be interested and study the characteristics of a clone of the Sangiovese vine, the Sangiovese Grosso, called Brunello by the local citizens for the intense and dark colour of its mantle. The story resumed in 1860, when Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, grandson of Clemente and the legitimate son of Jacopo Biondi and Caterina Santi, began to produce a red wine made from this grape that immediately proved to have all the right cards in order to become something extraordinary. It was in those years that the catastrophe brought by the insect phylloxera hit the vines and plundered the crops like a real epidemic, eating everything in its path. So the farmers, frightened and afraid of the damage of the insect, tried to get a quick financial feedback of the new vines, selling the red wines on the market as quickly as possible. Ferruccio was not of the same opinion and rowed back against the trend. He thought that wine was the most faithful friend of the time and that only with the passing of the years it could become great. So he made wine in purity with the Sangiovese Grosso that he cultivated in his estate Greppo and he waited for it a long time in the cellar, until it had reached its perfect degree of maturation. A few years later he tasted it and shocked every citizen. That day remained in history because the first and historic Brunello was born, whose roots remain forever linked to the Biondi Santi family. From that day on, the prestige and fame of this brand began to increase in value, thanks to targeted interventions, modernization of techniques and selection of the best types of Sangiovese.
