August Bedrich Piepenhagen (1791-1868) - Paisaje fluvial
Oil on canvas - Signed by hand, 19th century

He belonged to a humble family. As a child, he was apprenticed to a manufacturer of buttons and braids. After becoming a traveller, he travelled all over Europe and was particularly impressed by Switzerland, which led him to make some attempts to paint. He stayed briefly in Zurich and took some basic lessons from Johann Heinrich Waest, but otherwise he was completely self-taught.

In 1811 he happened to be in Prague, where he was hired by a button manufacturer. After the death of his employer, he married his widow and took over the button business. Although he was successful in his craft, he began to paint more frequently and to show his work in the store. Soon, he was making more money from his paintings and had caught the attention of the famous landscape painter Josef Navrátil. He also earned the admiration of the writer Adalbert Stifter.

He died in a farm on the outskirts of Prague. His tomb is adorned with a statue of the Czech sculptor Tomáš-Seidan.

*Highly sought-after painter, he gained his fame after his death.
