Beautiful antique silver domed-lid box, engraved on all sides with allegorical scenes relating to Love between a gentleman and a lady. (Also known as a Knotte-kistje or chest). This box is a part of the Frisian folklore.use. In the Sixteenth century it was customary in the northern Netherlands, that a young man offered his lady a coin when asking for her hand in marriage. From the moment that she accepted this coin they were considered as being betrothed. If several coins were offered, they were presented in a cloth with a special knot: this was the so-called Knotte (or Knotte cloth). In times of greater prosperity, the cloth was replaced by such a silver chest, the so-called "Knotte" chest. This chest is in very good condition and has been tested for silver content.
