Charles de Secondat MONTESQUIEU
Le temple de Gnide
Chez Le Mire, A Paris 1772, Large 8vo (16 × 24 cm), (2) vij, 104 pp., bound.

First edition of this famous 18th century illustrated book. The text was entirely engraved by Drouet. The illustration, entirely engraved by Le Mire, includes an engraved title, a frontispiece and nine figures by Eisen. Printing on top-quality paper.
Full calf with contemporary marbling. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Decoration at tail and head. Part of title in red morocco.
A special work by Montesquieu, Le temple de Gnide is a poem of seven songs in prose, a pastoral. The book appeared with a certain scent of scandal. This edition, produced by the engraver Le Mire, is beautiful, the margins are wide, the typography elegant, the illustrations of Eisen excellent. Charles de Secondat MONTESQUIEU
