Very old mask worn by the Newar Shamans of southwestern Nepal. They served in certain shamanistic and animistic rites for medicine among other things. By its very rough style, it can be compared with the Timor masks of Eastern Indonesia.
This mask has a handle for carrying. Through its four openings, the face has a very benevolent expression.
The mask is made of very lightweight wood, a sign of its age. Very black, smoky patina. Missing the very uppermost extremity of the mask.
