Roger Montané spent his youth in Foix and Toulouse, dropped out of high school in the first year, and joined the Toulouse School of Fine Arts. In 1947, as a state scholarship holder, he moved to Paris and often visited the studio of André Lhote (1885-1962), at Nº 18 rue d'Odessa in the Montparnasse district.

He served in the military in 1936.

Roger Montané married in 1945, and became a drawing teacher for the city of Paris. In 1948, he travelled to Austria, to Italy, visited Venice and Prague. He met François Desnoyer and joined the Association of Painting Lovers. In 1951, he travelled to The Netherlands and discovered the northern skies that changed the way he treated light and changed his palette. A second trip to Venice in 1953 saw him evolve into a monumental style of painting. In 1958, he went to Japan and discovered oil pastel, with which he worked on the motif.

In 1964, Roger Montané went to the United States and exhibited in different cities on the Old and New Continent. His third trip to Venice will further modify his palette towards more intense colours. He became president of the Salon d'automne in 1966. He befriended the painter Ray Letellier in 1967.

He went to Iran with the group of the Autumn Salon which exhibited in Tehran in 1974. He spent time with his friend Christian d'Espic in La Cadière-d'Azur. Roger Montané was awarded the status of Navy painter in 1979.

In 1982, he became the founding president of Association 109, a group of painters that also included Jean Bertholle, Roland Bierge, Jack Chambrin, Jean Marzelle and Marcel Mouly, who from 1983 organized its own biennial. Armand Lanoux, of the Goncourt Academy, presented him with the Medal of Merit on behalf of the President of the Republic in the hall of the Montfermeil City Hall.

He stayed and exhibited in Kiev, Ukraine in 1991.
