Etching - Plate signed - 1816

The Dance of Death. From the original designs of Hans Holbein, with 30 coloured plates engraved by W. Hollar.

London, J. Coxhead, 1816. 8vo. Original half-leather binding with richly gold gilded spine and marbled boards. Marbled endpapers. Up front: several pages in an old manuscript, followed by the 30 prints of this series. All printed on luxurious heavy paper with wide margins and beautifully old hand-colouring. Printed on velin paper.

In good condition. Binding is nice. A manuscript page is loose. Paper is very slightly tanned.

Wenzel Hollar originally published his work in 1651 as "Mortalium Nobilitas". This series is supposedly made by an unknown artist, after Hollar's design. Nevertheless, a very beautiful and rare dance of death.
