Biography of Rafael Estrany i Ros (Mataró, 1884 - Barcelona, 1958):
He was born on October 14, 1884 in Mataró, Barcelona.
He started his training in the school of arts and crafts of Mataró, where he was a student of Josep Vinardell. He continued his training in the Academia Baixas, in Barcelona, where he contacted Joaquín Torres García and Ismael Smith. Later, he travelled to Paris in order to study in the famous academy Julien, and to Belgium, where he met James Ensor, from whom he received fruitful lessons and training.
He held more than sixty individual exhibitions and participated in other national and international collective exhibitions in Mexico, Panama, Rome and in several itinerant exhibitions in museums in the United States, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, London, Venice and Madrid.
He was awarded in several national exhibitions in Madrid and Catalonia, at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes of Sant Jordi, water colourists group of Catalonia and international of Mexico and Panama. In 1915 he obtained a grant from the Dirección General de Bellas Artes del Estado.
His quality is internationally recognized, being considered as one of the best Catalan painters of the 20th century.
He passed away in Barcelona on the 17th of January 1958
