In the 1998-1999 season, Associazione Calcio Milan returned to their previous winning ways under the guidance of new manager Alberto Zaccheroni. Zaccheroni, on loan from Udinese, brought striker Oliver Bierhoff and right-back Thomas Helveg with him from his former club. He introduced Milan in its unorthodox 3-4-4 formation (adapted to 3-4-4-2 in the second half of the season, to make room for a creative attacking midfielder) in which Bierhoff was a perfect centre-striker and scored 20 goals in the league.

Milan had a great second half of the season, in which they competed for the Serie A title with Lazio and Fiorentina. After seven consecutive victories in the last seven games, Milan took the Scudetto and became champion of Italy for the 16th time in their history.
