Description
Diptych Alfonso X dictating the Cantigas de Santa María - Medieval - Painting on wood
Spain - Early 20th century

Hand-painted diptych of one of the most valuable religious images of the Middle Ages, drawn by one of the members of the Court in honour of the Spanish King Alfonso X, The Wise This diptych was painted by the author in the early 20th century. The altarpiece is divided into two tables with two different scenes. In the first one, the king dictates to a scribe the pages of a sacred book of the Virgin Mary, the so-called Cantigas de Santa María, and in the second one, we see a group of nobles and the clergy. The whole altarpiece is hand-painted with high-relief stucco shapes on the top, painted in gold leaf and with Latin inscriptions.
