History, Literature - Quantity: 7 - Book

Anna Louisa Geertruida (‘Truitje’) Bosboom-Toussaint was one of the most important writers of her time. Her historical novels were very popular. Bosboom-Toussaint's urge to write was phenomenal. From a very young age she published work after work. She was friends with the most important writers of her time, but always maintained an independent position.

Bosboom-Toussaint remained independent all her life. She knew the most important writers of her time personally, but she maintained her own course in both literature and religious matters. In 1862 she became involved in a public debate with Busken Huet about modern theology. Eventually, the argument had to be settled by Potgieter. The debate proved that she was taken seriously by her male colleagues. This makes her an exception in the nineteenth century.

The culmination of her historical romance is the nine-part Leycester cycle. The first three parts of ‘De graaf van Leycester in Nederland’ appeared in 1845, followed by the trilogy ‘De vrouwen in het Leycestersche tijdvak’ in 1850 and concluded with three parts of ‘Gideon Florensz.’ in 1854. This cycle of novels also brought her the appreciation of professional historians.
