Watou is a village in the west of Belgium. Through its annual art and poetry festival, the village gained international fame. Poetry Summer is a two-month exhibition of art and poetry in a number of vacant and ruined locations. The project started in 1980 when the poet Gwij Mandelinck invited some friends to exhibit their work on the market of his village Watou. Many artists, but also fellow poets, accepted his proposal. The project was successful and the concept was further developed. Poetry and art are contrasted in the same space and very often new work is created with the aim of better blending the two disciplines and thus creating a stronger unity.
This collection of poems is a tribute to 25 years Watou by ‘recidivists par excellence’ and to the organizers Gwij Mandelinck and Agnes Hondekijn, “in order to do something in return”.
