Colonial history, Illustrated, Topography, Travels - Quantity: 1

A WINTER IN ARABIA by Freya Stark.  It is a first edition published in 1940 by John Murray.

Freya Stark's first adventures took her to Iran and the long-fabled Valley of the Assassins.  In 1934 Freya sailed down the REd Sea to Aden to begin a new adventure.  She hoped to trace the frankincense route of the Hadhramaut, the hinterland of southern Arabia.  Only a handful of Western explorers had previously ventured into the region, but never as far or as widely as she went.  She published her account of the region in three books - A The Southern Gates of Arabia: A Journey in the Hadhramaut; Seen in the Hadhramaut; and A Winter in Arabia.  This instalment is an account of time spent in Hureidha, in the heart of Hadhramaut, excavating one of the ancient cities of Southern Arabia but also recording day to day life including news of inter tribal rivalries and the rumours of war.  Her return journey west was made alone crossing unknown land, at one point being joined by the Sultan's caravan of 27 camels.  Includes 88 plates and 3 maps.

Green hardboards with gilt lettering to the spine.  Fading to the spine but otherwise boards in very good condition.  Pages clean and firm.  328 pages, 23 x 16 cm.
