Dutch first edition of Meyer's Universum complete with all 471 stealgravures bound in 10 uniformly half leather covers.
Condition: Fair. Covers with light wear. Due to paperquality there is the usual browning and foxing throughout all volumes. The browning and foxing varies, Lot of pages and engravings are clean or almost clean. In volumes 1 til 4 parts are waterstained.
The 36 photos give a good impression of the condition.
Joseph Meyer ( 1796 - 1856) was a German industrialist and publisher, He operated very successfully as a publisher, employing a system of serial subscription to publications, which was new at that time. To this end he founded a company, Bibliographisches Institut, in Gotha in 1826. It published several editions of the Bible, works of classical literature ("Miniatur-Bibliothek der deutschen Classiker", "Groschen-Bibliothek"), atlases, the world in pictures on steel engravings ("Meyers Universum") with 80,000 subscribers all over Europe), and an encyclopaedia, ("das Grosse Conversations-Lexikon für die gebildeten Stände") in 52 volumes.
