Antiquitatum Romanarum Pauli Manutii.
Liber De Legibus. Index Rerum Memorabilium.
Venetiis - 1559 -
pp. 340 (170 on the back).
15.5 x 10.5 cm.
Rare Aldine edition by Paolo Manuzio ( 1512/1574 ), son of Aldo.
He conceived a work, in 4 parts, on Roman antiquities.
Of these, only the present one, "De Legibus",
dedicated to legislation, was published before the humanist's death, while the remaining "De Senatu", "De Comitiis" and
"De Civitate Romana", were published later.
Compared to the first edition of 1557 (in folio ) it contains the same text but has a much richer index.
Firm and elegant 17th-century binding,
full parchment, with double two-tone tag “Aldus” and title with author.
Microscopic defect (about 1 mm.) at the upper outer corner of the back plate (see photos).
In very good condition.
The interiors are also well preserved.
On there cover page there is the typographic Aldine brand depicting the anchor with the dolphin, repeated on the back of the last blank sheet. Registrum at the end.
Spaces for drop caps with letter-guides.
A little browning on the upper margins of the pages (see photos). The text is perfectly readable.
Endpapers included, edges slightly sprayed with minium.
A fine copy.
