Jan was a versatile artist: ceramist, etcher, graphic artist, graphic designer, painter, draughtsman, illustrator, lithographer, pastellist, watercolourist and wood engraver.
He is known for his works of art with landscapes, still lifes and animals, especially fish and birds and his love of nature.
He took classes at the academy of fine arts and technical sciences in Rotterdam.
With his woodcuts, lithographs, etchings and book illustrations, Schonk is one of the most important graphic artists of the 20th century.
From the period 1930 - 1976, his oil paintings with nature and hunting scenes are known. Painted realistically, which is a testament to great craftsmanship.
He is mentioned at the RKD - Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis - and in the lexicons Pieter Scheen 1969-1970, Jacobs 1993 and 1996, Scharten 2000.
