Beautiful and rare series complete with the 5 plates taken from the fresco, now lost, of the Niobids, made by Polidoro da Caravaggio in the lower register of Palazzo Milesi in Rome.
It depicts the massacre of Niobe's children carried out with arrows by Apollo and Diana.
The plates, all on laid paper with watermark of double circle, coeval print run, nos. 1 - 2 are 3 -4 together, while no. 5 is separate. Plates 2 and 3 are shaped to allow them to form a continuum.
2 sheets trimmed to the framing line, only the sheet with plates 3-4 is trimmed along the image along the long sides, on the framing line on the lateral sides, and the top it reads 'Polidoro da Caravaggio inven. Gio Batta Galestruzzi fece'" at the bottom two-line Latin text on two columns and "In Roma 1656 con licenza de Superiori appresso l'autore".
Signature and monogram “GBG” repeated also in plate 5 on the thigh of the horse on the left.
