Bram van Dam - Mooie vrouwen [+ De Ooievaar] - 1888/1925
Erotica, Literature - Quantity: 2 - Book

1. Bram van Dam, Mooie vrouwen. Amsterdam / Soerabaia, Gebr. Graauw, late 1920s. Cloth. 208 pp. 4th edition. Condition: very fine copy, 21 × 16.5 cm.

Entertaining, typically ‘Hague’ novel written under pseudonym by the journalist Willem C. Tengeler (1853-1911). Seduction, passionate East Indian blood, abortion, calm doctors and an applauded murder. In 1905, when the book was first published, ‘Mooie vrouwen’ was considered pornography. The most explicit literary mention of abortion in Dutch literature around 1900 can be found here, and furthermore:
“Hij maakte haar japon, daarna haar onderkleding los, dat hals en boezem bloot kwamen, schoof hoog het raam open, ging bij haar zitten. Heftige sidderingen schokten haar lijf, hij greep haar polsen en klemde die vast tussen zijn handen. Dat hielp al. Na een poos nam hij haar zachte borsten, en onder die warme aanraking glimlachte ze met nog natte ogen.”

2. Bram van Dam (ed.) - De Ooievaar. Weekschrift voor Realistische Letterkunde en Critiek, volume 1, issue 1 (probably no other issues were published), 1 January 1888, paper cover, 16 pp., 16 × 12 cm. Condition: fair (extremely rare).
Literary weekly magazine by Bram van Dam (Willem C. Tengeler), who made his debut one year earlier with the novel ‘Doortje Vlas’. The magazine immediately received a lot of criticism from Lodewijk van Deyssel in the Nieuwe Gids. Contributions from Van Dam, also under the name Plox, etc. Rejected copy of the Nederlandsch Persmuseum.
