16 x 5 cm.
Former collection Belgium - Brought back in the 1960s.
This remarkable item, a Luba water pipe, probably belonged to a person of high rank.
The feminine silhouette is holding its breasts, which is the most common feature of Luba art. The gesture symbolises respect, education, and the role of women as mothers. The representation of a woman is also significant, since the Luba retrace female descent. The elaborate scarification and hairdo of the figure indicate that this is a rich woman of high social rank.
