Niccolò Zeno - Del L'Origine De' Barbari Che Distrussero Per Tutto'l Mondo L'Imperio Di Roma - 1557
History, Literature - Quantity: 1 - Book

Early nineteenth-century binding, green half leather and sponged paper; authors and fillets in gold on the spine, sprayed edges. Volume I: cover page with typographic brand, 6 unnumbered pages for the dedication and topic with decorated drop caps; 202 out of 210 numbered pages (pages from 153 to 160 included are missing), followed by 20 out of 23 unnumbered sheets. Some large decorated drop caps. First edition of this work on the origin of Goths, Huns, Vandals, Longobards, Franks, Arabs etc.; in the end, compiled with great rigour and extent, information around the origins of Venice. The author, who did not wish to give his name, was born in 1515 and was a member of the Council of Ten. It must be said that this collection of historical writings was presented again, only one year later, by Marcolini, to which Casali also credits with certainty this first edition; In fact, the dedication to Daniele Barbaro, Patriarch of Aquileia, bears the signature of Marcolini who then offered to reprint the work, after ordering it once more. On the one hand, the text of Marcolini’s second edition is improved, but on the other hand, there are also a lot of other structural errors. Volume II: cover page with large typographic brand of Giolito; 14 unnumbered pages; 239 numbered pages (the back of the last one is blank). Numerous screen-printed drop caps and headpieces. Porcacchi’s translation of Marcus Junianus Justinus’ reworking of Historiae Philippicae by Gnaeus Pompeius Trogus. In good condition, some sheet are missing in the first volume. Some oxidation in the second volume.
