Api Spa was born in 1933. In 2005, API buys from Eni the Italiana Petroli, better known as IP, which was merged by incorporation on 10th March 2007. Since 2006, it has been listed on the Italian Stock Exchange, but it never entered Piazza Affari.
Following the takeover of IP, API consolidated their position in the Italian fuel distribution market with a market share of around 11% at the time.
On 10th January 2018, API acquires from ERG the 25.16% shareholding in the SARPOM refinery in San Martino di Trecate, the logistics centre in Rome and the over 2,600 fuel stations of the TotalErg S.p.A. network, thereby strengthening their presence in Italy with over 5,000 service stations and becoming the second biggest player in the Italian oil industry
