Cypriot Terracotta jug “Bilbil” for Opium, 25 cm

Description
Cypriot Terracotta jug “Bilbil” for Opium, 25 cm
1400 B.C. Late Bronze Age

Both the body and the neck of this beautiful jug are decorated with white stripes that show some wear in the lower area until reaching its wide and rounded base. Archaeologists invented the name of Bilbil for these beautiful containers generally small because the word had difficult correspondence in Western languages. In some cases, analysis of the residues inside a bilbil jug has shown that it contained a kind of opium extract.
