* Between 1907 and 1915, the Dutch East Indian Governorate organized a number of expeditions to map parts of New Guinea that had not yet been mapped (well). Most of this was in the Dutch East Indian army, but private scientists were also involved. Participants included Captain Hendrik Colijn (the later Prime Minister, Mr. H. A. Lorenz (was the first to climb the Carstens Mountains, and wrote the book 'Black Men, White Mountains'), Captain F.J.P. Sachse from the Moluccas, the Captain of the Topographic Service A. Franssen Herderschee, etc. - not to mention a large contingent of forced laborers and Batak and Toradjase carriers (who were, among other things, responsible for the transport of the photo equipment and associated glass plates).
