ancestor statue Mangbetu - Wood - Belgian Congo

Description
ancestor statue Mangbetu - Wood - Belgian Congo
1st half 20th century - Good

This very old Mangbetu ancestor figure is of museum quality - Early 20th century or older. Beautiful credible patina. All typical Mangbetu features are present: wrapped head and the usual scarification lines on torso, arms and legs. Disproportioned large head and hands. On the other hand, very small breasts with pronounced nipples.
Exceptional aspects of this sublime figurine are: the diamond shaped scarification on cheeks until the eyes, the star anise like eyes in the form of a star -very unusual - and the feet made in such a way that the figurine can’t stand by itself, which strongly suggests that it is an important ancestor that had a fixed place had on the family or the village shrine.

Height: 38 cm.
Provenance: ex. coll. Willink - Dutch collection - acquired before 1950
Absolutely rare top object.
