Description
Mask - Wood - Woyo - Bakongo - DR Congo
2nd half 20th century - Good

Excellent Woyo mask with fabric headdress, sculpted with great wealth of details and with a naturalistic expression.

Bakongo masks are used during initiations or funerals of important people, they may have social control functions or be used by soothsayers and healers.

These pieces are less well known than their fetishes, although some share certain characteristics, such as eye cavities to insert glass fragments (element absent in this piece) and cavities to house magical elements.

Dimensions: 39 x 33 cm approximately with the fabric
