THE LAND AND THE BOOK OR BIBLICAL ILLUSTRATIONS DRAWN FROM THE MANNERS AND CUSTOMS, THE SCENES AND SCENERY OF THE HOLY LAND by W M Thomson. Published in 1873 by T Nelson and Sons, London. Split into four parts it covers Phoenicia and Palestine; Northern Palestine; Sea-coast plains - Sharon and Philistia; and Southern Palestine. Very well illustrated throughout with 12 colour plates as well as many in-text b/w illustrations. There is also a large fold-out map of Palestine at the start of the book.

Bound in its original green blind embossed hardboards with gilt emblems to the centre of the front board and spine. Both hinges cracked which has made the boards a little loose. Pages are a little unevenly bound but no loose or missing. 718 pages, 20 cm x 14 cm.

TRAVELS IN ARABIA DESERTA by Charles M Doughty, with a new preface by the author, introduction by T E Lawrence and all original maps, plans and illustrations. It is the thin-paper edition in one volume complete and unabridged. Published in 1926 by Jonathan Cape Ltd & the Medici Society Ltd. There is a very large colour fold-out map of North Western Arabia and Negd as well as 7 other full page/fold-out plates and other in-text b/w illustrations.

This is Doughty's best known book, a work in two volumes that, although it had little immediate influence upon its publication, slowly became a kind of touchstone of ambitious travel writing, one valued as much for its language as for its content. T. E. Lawrence rediscovered the book and caused it to be republished in the 1920s, contributing an admiring introduction of his own. The book is a vast recounting of Doughty's treks through the Arabian deserts, and his discoveries there. It is written in an extravagant and mannered style, largely based on the King James Bible but constantly surprising with verbal turns and odd inventiveness.

Black boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Blind embossed border to boards. Some wear to corners and top and bottom of the spine. Book plate to front endpaper. Map has some tears. Pages generally clean and firm. 623 and 690 pages. 22.5 x 14.5 cm.
