Description
Sappho - Poésies de Sappho - 1952
Illustrated, Poetry - Quantity: 1 - Numbered edition - Book

Rare book of Sappho’s poems, translated into French by Theodore Reinach, printed by Jean Porson in 1952, in 275 copies (this is No. 245) on Veline d'Arches paper, loose quatrains a in beautiful case. The book is well preserved, pages a little yellowed (not as they seem in some images due to the very high resolution of the scanner, more precise than the human eye).
The volume is embellished with 18 etchings, two of which are on double page, by Jacques Houplain (1920 - 2020) well-known French painter and engraver. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, in his long life he has carried out several activities, a successful engraver, since 1952 member of the French National Committee of engraving, of which he became vice-president in 1969. In 1949 he won the Prix Abd-El-Tif in Algiers (where he lived for two years); In 1983 he won the Prix de la gravure at the Dreux Biennale and in 1994 the Grand Pix Léon-Georges Baudry of the Taylor Foundation. He has exhibited his works in numerous museums: Poitiers, Geneva, Toulon, Nimes, and in numerous art galleries and public spaces.
