anklet (1) - Copper - Mbole - Congo

Description
anklet (1) - Copper - Mbole - Congo
Excellent

The Mbole are a people living in the Congo region north of the Kasai and Sankuru rivers. On their legs, the women of the Mbole wear bangles made by local coppersmiths; these have a diameter of more than 30 centimetres and can weigh up to four kilograms. Although these anklets are a hindrance to the wearers when walking, they are an indispensable status symbol. Walking slowly shows dignity and proves that the woman can afford not to rush. Plus, the anklets are valuable objects, particularly needed for the settling of the bride price.
