Description and use: This type of scale calculates the yarn threads titration. A yarn titre is an index of the yarn thickness which is proportional to the section of the yarn itself. The titre, depending on the type of yarn and the metrological convention, can be calculated in different ways, obviously giving different results, consistently with the followed convention.
The instrument sits in a wooden case covered with black python-print leather and equipped with a steel tweezer, 3 additional brass weights and 4 aluminium sheets with predetermined dimensions; these sheets serve to determine the weight of fabric pieces having a known surface.
The instrument consists of a sturdy steel stem with coated with black enamel, integral with a folding "T" base, made of the same material. The base has an adjustable screw foot at one end, with a knurled ring nut in polished steel, which allows an index reset when the supporting base is not perfectly horizontal.
The stem holds a hinge on which, through a hard steel knife, is embedded an unusual Y-shaped yoke bearing two suspension hooks and an indicator, placed respectively in the 3 branches of the "Y".
The stem also holds the quadruple measuring scale. Three scales marked respectively as with BE - COTTON, WE - WOOL, LE - LINEN HEMP, give the titration of the various threads, while the fourth scale, marked as M - MILLIG, uses the weight measures displayed in units of the metric-decimal system CGS.
With particular regard to the metric-decimal scale, based on the configuration, we have the following characteristics:
1) Load = 140 mg, Sensitivity = 1 mg, obtained using the right hook only (the lower hook is free).
2) Load = 700 mg, Sensitivity = 5 mg, obtained by suspending the five-fold weight on the lower hook.
3) Load = 1400 mg, Sensitivity = 10 mg, obtained by suspending the ten-fold weight on the lower hook.
4) Load = 2800 mg, Sensitivity = 20 mg, obtained by suspending the twenty-fold weight on the lower hook.
